    Who are NEET Droppers?

NEET droppers are students who choose to take a gap year (or more) after completing Class 12 to focus completely on preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Many candidates often take a drop if they are not satisfied with their scores in the previous NEET UG exam, and hence NEET droppers form a significant portion of total applicants. As there is no limit on NEET attempts, this allows repeaters to try again and score good. Such candidates are required to select the correct NEET dropper code during application and prepare documents such as the gap certificate for NEET.

NEET Dropper Code: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

The NEET dropper code refers to the Qualifying Examination Code that repeat or dropper students need to select in the NEET application form 2026. This code tells whether the applicant is appearing for class 12, has already passed, or is taking a drop year.

The NEET dropper code is important for all the repeaters or droppers, as choosing the wrong one can lead to rejection of the application form of NEET UG.

Code for Droppers in NEET 2026: Which One to Choose?

For NEET 2026, the correct code for droppers is generally Code 02. This code applies to all those candidates who have already passed their Class 12 or equivalent examination from recognised boards such as CBSE, ICSE, or any state board in a previous year. NEET Code 02 is meant for repeaters who studied Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects, along with any additional subject like Mathematics. NEET droppers from open schooling are also eligible under Code 02.

However, in some cases, Code 03 may be applicable, which is mainly for students who completed a Pre-University Course (PUC) or pre-degree programme, commonly followed in states like Karnataka. For droppers who hold higher qualifications such as a BSc degree, they need to select codes like Code 05 or Code 06.

NEET Dropper Documents Required for Application Form

NEET droppers are required to submit the following list of documents required for NEET application form -

Gap Certificate for NEET Droppers: Is It Mandatory?

A gap certificate for NEET droppers is not required during the NEET application process, but it is often asked during counselling or at the time of college admission by many institutions. This gap certificate explains the reason for the academic gap, and confirms that the candidate did not take admission elsewhere or engage in misconduct.

To obtain a gap certificate for NEET, candidates must prepare an affidavit on a stamp paper, mentioning their name, gap duration, reason for the gap, and a declaration of authenticity. The document must be notarised at a court or by a notary public. The gap certificate should be recent (generally valid for one year) and should be kept ready for submission during state quota or AIQ NEET UG counselling.
